We uphold the heart as this great organ. It reaches legendary status lounging around the Mount Olympus of Organs alongside the brain. They, especially the brain, think of themselves highly. Without them, we’d all be dead. And sure, they’re right. We need the heart to feed the brain. And the brain gets the show on the road. But can we consider the other organs for once?
Consider with me the spleen. I mean you don’t need a spleen. You CAN live without it. Some people really do. But life without the spleen is a frightening one. The spleen is vital to our immune system. I mean but what a fun word, right? S, P, L, and E rarely get along, but here they are so happy together.
Ok, but why am I asking you to consider the spleen and other such organs? Partly, I just think that we should use the word more. You need skin in the game? Nah, you need your spleen in the game. These are just fun phrases. But really, I think it's an opportunity to appreciate a lot of things in our lives. Run with the metaphor here. For example, there is no necessity in reading a good book. But life without it would be quite dull, huh? You don’t need music. But what’re you going to do? Sit in silence? There are so many things we don’t need. And sometimes we feel like we’re wasting time on things we don’t need. We are so often hyper fixated on that that is “necessary.” But just remember what life would be like without your spleen. Without your spleen, we are so much more susceptible to the horrors of life. Same goes for the little things. Those simple things that you don’t need but make you happy anyways. Savor that. So please, consider the spleen.
