A Letter to Canines

Hello Dog,

There is something peculiar about your love. For thousands of years you have been at our side, and for those same years we humans have prided ourselves on our unique linguistic capabilities. Millions and millions of words across cultures and continents. With complex syntax and nuanced semantics, words can bring peace to war. Words can reveal our deep truths while keeping deeper ones hidden. Every human has the ability to say “I love you” but how many say it with honesty? Despite the power of our words, we struggle to speak on our basic feelings. The situation is so bad we have to write novels of verbose literary force to somehow communicate some semblance of our emotions. And yet you, a dog, have no way of speaking. All you can do is bark, growl, whimper, and howl. People can lie. People can hide. We’re always guessing about others. You understand only a few words like “treat” or “shower,” yet you understand us perfectly. Human love comes, stays, and goes. But I know who you love, and I know who you don’t. You show your love so plainly with your wagging tail or gift of dirty socks. You read us like an open book and you are one too. Your actions and honesty expose the weakness in our words and our facade. We have much to learn from you, best friend.

Stay fluffy,

Human
